Although we posted about child safety during Child Safety Month (October), at Windows to the World, we feel that it’s an important enough topic to raise it again—this time with some additional info and resources, including sites where you can learn more, such as there:
- American National Standards Institute
- Consumer Product Safety Commission
- Window Covering Safety Council
- Window Coverings Manufacturers Association
The window treatment industry has been aware of the dangers of the hanging, dangling cords on honeycomb shades, horizontal blinds, pleated shades, roll-up shades/roller shades, and Roman-style shades. However, today, there is no reason for us to lose another child through “Infant Cord Strangulation.” If you have not updated your functioning window treatments, perhaps it is time. Order a retrofit kit—here are two options:
- The new, cost-effective Safe-T-Wand, which encases hanging, dangling, strangling cords. If you have woven wood or Roman shades, get The ProLift™ system. Click here to learn more about the Safe-T-Wand retrofit kits and where to buy them.
- Contact the WCSC directly to order a free retrofit kit. Call 1-800-506-4636 or email info@windowcoverings.org.
The Window Covering Industry uses many methods to communicate the potential hazards of corded window treatments. The use of tags helps communicate the important message of child safety and the potential strangulation hazards of corded window treatments. Hunter Douglas, a leader in child and pet safety, has numerous operating systems, so dangerous dangling cords don’t ever have to be an issue.
Choose from motorization options, including the PowerView™ App, which lets you program your shades to move any time throughout the day—even when you’re not there. Or you can choose the LiteRise® or SimpleLift™ Operating Systems, which allow you to push up to raise and pull down to lower the shades—they’ll stay right where you put them. The Vertiglide™ system has no lift cords, chains, or wands and is perfect for window treatments that open side to side, such as patio doors. Wand control and the clutch lifting system both allow you to control your coverings without cords, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and increasing safety.
